It never rains in Ilfracombe
Ha ha ha, before I moved to ‘combe, we had come here on holiday a few times, during school summer holidays. Whenever we came here it was always lovely sunny weather. One year we had two weeks of unbroken sunshine and when I got home my garden looked like TV footage of Ethiopia during the worst of the droughts.
We moved just before Christmas 2011 and I told my kids that “it never rains in Ilfracombe”. As everybody knows, since then, the UK weather has been abysmal, with torrential rain almost constantly. Nearby Braunton experienced terrible flooding, and several premises in our own High Street had water coming in.
I kept trying to convince them that it never rains in Ilfracombe, despite the water running down our street in raging torrents, and them coming home soaked to the skin from school because they had not taken a waterproof coat in the morning.
So now we are finally enjoying a proper summer again, here is a shot that kind of sums of how I picture Ilfracombe
