Watermouth Castle

Situated on the outskirts of Ilracombe, between Hele and Berrynarbor, this is not only one of the main attractions for Ilfracombe and Combe Martin but also one of the top tourist destinations for North Devon.

There is an eclectic mix of things to interest all age groups here, although some things may be a little scary for younger visitors, and there is less for teenagers than most theme parks. Nevertheless Watermouth Castle is highly rated.

The castle itsef was built in 1825 but later was allowed to deteriorate until it was acquired in 1977 by Ricard Haines who began developing it into its current form.

There is considerable interest inside the castle to make it worth a visit even if the weather is less than perfect, with animatronic displays, antique pier machines, historic toys and games, and displays of Victorian life. Down in the dungeons there are more scary exhibits which may frighten the youngest visitors or those of a nervous disposition. Once outside there are landscaped gardens, divided into various areas. Gnomeland features displays of gnomes in their natural habitat, Merry go land has mainly rides for younger visitors, Adventure land is a little more exciting although there are no really white knuckle rides, there are places to eat in Watermouth Fayre including a picnic area if you have brought your own food to keep costs down.

The Water Show Extravaganza is particularly good and unusual. Mechanically controlled fountains and lights dance to the music of a 500+ pipe organ in a genuine extravaganza of light and music.

Prices: Although the cost of entry is not cheap, there is a special deal if you want to revisit. Visit the official website for more details.
